HOURS: Part-time: 20 hours, 12 months

COMPENSATION: Base salary is $32,500.  Salary commensurate with experience.

Start Date: July 1-August 1, 2025 (flexible start)

OVERVIEW

First Parish in Brookline, a Unitarian Universalist Congregation, with a small but vibrant and growing religious exploration program, seeks a Children and Youth R.E. Coordinator. We seek a person able to help organize and staff our Sunday programs. We’re looking for someone eager to guide young people’s spiritual growth and to support them and their families as they learn to bring their values to actions both local and global.

As a Children and Youth R.E. Coordinator, you will collaborate with a community enthusiastic about sharing U.U. values with the coming generation. We offer more than just a job; this can be an opportunity to educate and empower the next generation of leaders and activists.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Religious Exploration for Children and Youth (Nursery – Grade 12) 

  • Work with the committee to choose curriculum for next year.
  • Work with the R.E. committee to establish how many volunteers might be needed for which classes. Recruit and CORI-check volunteers, and oversee safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with the Minister and Worship Committee re: a 40 week Sunday schedule for intergenerational services, and holiday/pageant dates.
  • Work with the Welcoming and Membership Chair to match, and recruit volunteers, and reach out to families that have been missed.  
  • Coordinate with website/social media/newsletter leaders to communicate RE events, needs, etc. with the congregation and larger community.
  • Recruit, vet and schedule nursery care for Sunday services (early September through mid-June) and First Fridays (once a month).

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably with a focus on education
  • At least one year of experience working with children in an educational or spiritual setting. Credentialed Religious Educator or equivalent experience is a plus. 
  • Familiarity with Unitarian Universalism and its liberal religious theology, values and programs preferred, or an openness and commitment to learn 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with congregants, parents, youth, volunteers, and other staff members
  • Strength with email and messaging communications, MS Office and Google Docs, and online scheduling/coordination systems (mailing lists, calendars)

SCHEDULE AND BENEFITS

  • The CRE will be expected to be at church on Sundays from September to June, which is the active church year. Afternoon, evening and weekend-only hours are possible. 
  • The role is hybrid with meetings held both in-person and on zoom.
  • The CRE will be expected to maintain scheduled office hours, participate in staff meetings, and attend evening or weekend meetings and church events as requested. 
  • Preparation for the next church year happens during the summer. A flexible summer schedule may be negotiated. 
  • Continuing education, training and participation in conferences and professional gatherings are important for the professional development of the CRE. Continuing education and study leave time are offered as part of our professional benefits package; such time to be approved by the CRE supervisor. 
  • Sponsored membership in Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA) available.
