Unitarian Universalist congregations are governed under a system called “Congregational Polity”. We are autonomous, self-governing, and independent with final authority resting within the local membership rather than external bishops or councils.
Key Principles of Congregational Polity
- Autonomy: Each local church is independent and responsible
for its own affairs. - Democratic Governance: Decisions are typically made by vote
of the congregation. - Leadership Choice: The congregation calls its own ministers
and elects its own leaders. - Voluntary Association: While independent, we belong to the
Unitarian Universalist Association which provides guidance and
connection to other UU organizations and congregations. - Individual Member Voice: Every member holds a stake in
decision-making.
Our Bylaws and Lay Leadership
Our church is governed by our bylaws, which can be found here.
Among other things, they define the powers and duties of our
Parish Board which oversees the governance of the church.
Annual Meeting
An Annual Meeting of Members is held each May at which we
elect members of the Parish Board, approve a budget for the
coming year and address other congregation wide issues that could
require a vote such as changes to our bylaws, a disbursement from
our endowment, selling of property or calling a settled minister. Our
bylaws require that we have a quorum of members for any votes to
be official.
Below are the By-Laws as Amended on June 1, 2025
